Welcome, Outspark fans! Today we introduce our first installment of “Game Masters: A Closer Look”, where we get an intimate moment with some of our most popular GMs for Fiesta, Secret of the Solstice, Wind Slayer, and Project Powder.

This week we “Rayse” the roof with one of our well-known and easy-going Outspark GMs who will give us a better perspective of what it’s like to be a Fiesta Game Master, as well as the man behind that that shiny suit of armor.

In-game handle: Rayse

Name: Jeff or Kino

Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Specialty: Concept game art and design

S: So Jeff, or Rayse I should say. Does your GM name have a story or meaning behind it?

Rayse: I get asked this question quite often; however in the case of this name, it has none. I had to come up with a name that no one else used in the games and most of the good ones were not available. While trying to figure out a good one I settled on Rayse, and it was not in use, so I took it.

S: What’s the correct pronunciation?

Rayse: It’s sounds just like the word “raise”.

S: What’s your most favorite thing to do when you aren’t gaming? And you can only choose one.

Rayse: Eh? I have to pick only one.

S: Yes, my rules this time, sorry.

Rayse: Well… I guess if I had to choose one it would be drawing. It’s nice to doodle and sketch something and then fine tune it ’till it really pops off the page and looks unique. As for art style though, it’s anime. I was never much of a fan of realism. While I can draw people so they look real, it’s more fun to exaggerate things.

S: What’s been your most amusing moment as a GM thus far?

Rayse: Oh, there have been quite a few fun moments. Though I think the most amusing is how no matter how many times you kill people off in events, they enjoy it. I have to say I’m shocked that people can have fun dying but if it’s fun for them then that’s all that matters. However, I think they prefer attempting to kill me or any other GM the most!

S: Other than Fiesta, what’s your favorite game and/or genre?

Rayse: Ouch, not sure that I have a single favorite game of all games. If it’s per genre it’s easier to list and explain why. Though for now the game I enjoy the most in my off time is Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles. I love the story and the art style is wonderful; it’s like a watercolor painting come to life. A good turn based game is always rare.

S: Ah, a turn based fan! Have you played Heroes of Might and Magic 5?

Rayse: I have played the older ones but not Might and Magic 5.

S: You’re missing out, it’s awesome. Anyway, I digress. So, because I sit in rather close proximity to you here at Outspark, I notice you enjoying a Hot Pocket once in awhile, but outside of work what typically would you be seen eating while playing video games at home?

Rayse: Oh, if you ask anyone that talks with me it’s cookies. No one can argue with a cookie and a glass of milk as far as I know. Chips are good too, however greasy hands with a keyboard and mouse wind up being a bad thing.

S: I thank you for not saying “Rayse-ins”. So, according to my colleague here, this one’s the money question. If you could choose between being able to fly, turn invisible, or teleport, which would you choose and why?

Rayse: I would want to fly. I have no idea why but flying is just something that everyone wants to be able to do at one point. So it would be a dream to actually get that chance. Well, as long as no plane or other hazards of the sky wind up attacking me.

S: You mean like Honeyings?

Rayse:

S: Jeff?

Rayse:

Much thanks to Jeff for this interview. Check his profile out here and add him as a friend!

Make sure you’re there for his next event this Sunday: “Riddle Me Rayse

Come back for our next installment when we take a closer look into the mind of [GM] Nekopon!
